Interview with web page editor at star magazine

Hi Megan, I am the web editor for StarMagazine.com. Here are some answers to your questions!
1) What makes gossip so intresting to you?
Gossip is interesting to me because, I admit, I am a nosey person! I love knowing what’s going on in my friends and family’s lives and that extends to people on TV and in the movies. I’m always eager to learn something new and experience opportunities through others that I might never be able to have myself.

2) Why do you think that gossip is so interesting to the general public?
Most people like to gossip because it’s fun. It’s easy to gossip about celebrities, particularly TV stars, because they come into your home on a daily or weekly basis and therefore you feel like they are a friend. However, with celebs, there’s no risk of offending them since you have no direct contact with them.

3) How many people at your magazine get to interview celebs?
In general, the structure of magazine staff has only a few people who actually interview celebs on a regular basis. Those people are usually reporters or senior reporters. They interview celebs, transcribe their files and then submit them to an editor. Luckily, because most places are short staffed, bosses are usually happy to let editors or other staff members (assistants, web editors, writers) go to events to do interviews if they are interested. It’s a win-win situation because more ground is covered and more opportunities for stories arise.

4) Is contacting celebs easy?
Once you are in the magazine or celebrity journalism business, it is relatively easy to contact publicists for celebrities. There are databases which list actors and who represents them. Once you email or call a publicist, they can set you up with a phone interview or put you on a list to attend a press junket or red carpet premiere.

5) What is your favorite and least favorite parts of your job?
My favorite part is getting to interview celebrities, attend red carpet events and see movies before they come out in the theaters! And there’s always the thrill of breaking a story before the competition does. My least favorite thing is the long hours and sometimes sitting at a desk all day is hard which it is why it’s nice to go to events — but those usually happen at night.

6) Do you believe good part of the public runs on gossip?
Yes, following celebrity gossip has a certain universal appeal. Someone who lives in NYC knows just as much of what Brad and Angelina are up to as someone in the Mid-West. You can be in a doctors office or on line at the grocery store and almost every person can tell you what happened on American Idol. Even people who don’t enjoy gossip tend to get drawn in because the headlines are always in front of their face on magazine and newspaper covers.
Thanks and good luck with your class!

Matt Damon and Jake Gyllenhaal Said No to Avatar

Would they of been a better Jake sully Avatar fans, or was Sam Worthington good enough?

Could you imagine Jason Bourne or the Prince of Persia as a Na’vi? Well, according to The LA Times, James Cameron at one point offered both Matt Damon and Jake Gyllenhaal the role of Jake Sully in Avatar. Both promptly refused.

The impression might be that Cameron went first for big, bankable names, then settled for an unknown. However, according to Cameron himself, Sam Worthington was always his first choice for the role. He apparently only contacted bigger-name stars to appease Fox studio heads, who were worried about the risk of assigning the lead role of such an expensive movie to someone without proven box-office draw.

Honestly, did I go out and try to woo [Damon and Gyllenhaal]? No. I had my heart set on Sam. Maybe they sensed my lack of 100% commitment from me. Maybe it was the subject matter. This was a big Star Wars-type movie. They’re both serious actors.

As it was, Cameron got his pick, and Worthington became an overnight star. Not bad for someone who previously was living in his car.
